The salts of lignosulfonic acid and hydroxylated carboxylic acids, and carbohydrates such as sucrose, glucose, glucose polymers, and sodium gluconate are among the chemical admixtures commonly used as set retarders for Portland cement hydration. Many of these compounds are also found in water reducer formulations.
