reflecting on this, I think that the environmental problems with peat moss, at least in central Canada (and probably, therefore, through the US), are that extraction of the peat is 1) a cover for habitat destruction for agriculture or other ends, and 2) that the horticultural peat is extracted from the peaty wetlands closest to the markets, which are on the fringe of the area where peatlands occur, making them more valuable .
